Gary Weir will present the processes CFA uses for the introduction into service of new firefighting equipment. Tim Procter will present on balancing electricity network reliability, safety and economic efficiency when dealing with bushfire risk.
Operations Manager, Wildfire Planning & Forestry Industry Brigades, CFA
Gary has worked for CFA as an operational officer for over 30 years, serving in both the field and in their headquarters. He has operational experience with firefighting during the Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday fire emergencies, and most other Victorian major campaign fires since 1980. Gary has had leadership roles with emergencies such as the Longford Gas Explosion and Hazelwood mine hazmat fire. In 2000, Gary had the opportunity to be part of the first ever Australian and New Zealand firefighting team invited over to the United States to lead US firefighting teams in the wilderness areas of Montana.
Gary’s current role is part of a team which provides 24/7 coverage as the CFA’s State Duty Officer and involves strategic management of bushfire and planned burning. He is also the Manager for all of CFA’s privately operated plantation company industry brigades.

Tim is one of Australia’s leading due diligence engineers. With wide-ranging industry experience, Tim shares his knowledge and expertise through postgraduate lecturing, seminars, books, academic papers, and with some of Australia’s largest organisations. He regularly presents on the advantages of adopting the precaution based approach to risk instead of the hazard based process, which has been dominant in Australia in recent times. Tim is also a member of Engineers Australia Victorian Committee for the College of Leadership and Management.
