  1. The REBoK Lexicon The purpose of the REBoK is to help explain the essence and boundaries of risk engineering by capturing and updating the concepts, skills, and practices generally accepted and known within the field. An essential part of this is to develop our risk engineering lexicon. A lexicon is the vocabulary of a language or branch of knowledge. The word lexicon derives from the Greek word lexikon, meaning 'of or for words'. The REBoK lexicon comprises a definition of words, terms and acronyms and, where necessary, some further context. The lexicon is arranged theme by theme and then alphabetically within those themes. The source is quoted where the definition comes from an accepted industry source, e.g. but not limited to standards. Users should be aware of relying only on the REBoK lexicon as the source documents may change the word's meaning. Also, there can be a lag in updating some complementary standards resulting in ambiguity in definitions and terminology until the documents are brought into synchronisation. An example of this is the 2018 update of 2009 ISO 31000: Risk management: Guidelines; a complementary document to this standard is ISO Guide 73: Risk Management – Vocabulary has not been updated since 2009. REBoK is a living and continuously developing project. We invite you to help drive its success and value by providing your comments for any relevant definitions, terms or acronyms.
